What Does a Flex Fuel Sensor Do?

A flex fuel sensor measures the ethanol concentration of the fuel currently passing through the fuel system.

Instead of assuming the vehicle contains a fixed gasoline or E85 blend, a compatible engine-management system can use the sensor signal to determine the actual ethanol content and apply the appropriate fuel, ignition, boost, and other calibration strategies configured by the tuner.

This is especially useful because the ethanol percentage of fuel sold as E85 can vary. A sensor-based system allows the ECU strategy to respond to the fuel that is actually in the vehicle rather than relying on an assumed blend.

E85-Compatible Plumbing Is Not the Same as Flex Fuel

PTFE hose and E85-compatible fuel-system components allow a fuel system to safely carry ethanol-based fuels, but that alone does not make the vehicle flex fuel.

A true sensor-based flex-fuel system requires:

• Compatible wiring or signal electronics
• An ECU or engine-management system capable of receiving the sensor signal
• A properly configured flex-fuel calibration
• Appropriate tuning for the vehicle and fuel system
